Years 1 - 2 (The Lower Years)

Our Lower Years curriculum is stimulating, exciting, and grounded in the Science of Reading and Writing, establishing literacy and numeracy as the vital building blocks of lifelong learning. At St. Michael’s College, we proactively plan for the unique learning journeys of all students through the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

To support this, our Year One and Two classes are accompanied by qualified and experienced Educational Assistant until 1:15pm each day, enabling a highly effective, continuous cycle of Tier 1 and Tier 2 small-group instruction. Through regular universal screening and ongoing formative monitoring, our teachers precisely evaluate student progress to design flexible, targeted small groups in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

While our students richly benefit from collaborative whole-class lessons, explicit small-group teaching allows us to manage cognitive load and target exact learning needs daily. In this way, the St. Michael’s College way provides a diverse, safe, and inclusive learning environment tailored to challenge every child and support them in achieving "Wisdom Through Growth."
